World War II (WWII) Sweetheart and Military Jewelry

My interest in military and sweetheart items comes to me via my father. During World War II he saw almost 3 years of active service. According to his "Enlisted Record and Report of Separation" he was discharged on 11/9/1945, his grade was T-4, and he was attached to the 36th Calvary Recon Troop. Dad, happy Memorial Day!!!

Vintage 1940's 14K Rose Gold Filled Tank Wrist Watch Lord Elgin - 21 Jewel - Engraved 1942 WWII
Vintage 1940's 14K Rose Gold Filled Tank Wrist Watch Lord Elgin - 21 Jewel - Engraved 1942 WWII

1940's Lord Elgin mechanical wrist watch with a tank style case. The case of this watch has a 14K pink or rose gold filled top and back. The inside of the case is marked "Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co Schwab & Wuischpard 14K Gold Filled". To give an indication of the case size, the front measures 1" wide (including the crown) by 1-5/8" tall (lug to lug). Cosmetic condition: case, crown, dial, and crystal in very good condition. The back of the case is engraved: "G.C. to A.C. 8-13-42". Mechanical condition: will run and keeps good time. In the 1930s, Elgin introduced a “Lord Elgin” line of watches. They are a step up from regular Elgins in at least 2 respects. They were almost always fitted with 21-jewel movements rather than the 17 jewel or 19 jewel movements in regular Elgins. Also gold-filled cased Lord Elgins had gold-filed tops and backs, compared with stainless or base metal combination for plain Elgins. I have no idea when the watch movement was last cleaned, oiled, and timed. It is being sold as is, no guarantee is implied. Insured shipping in the USA will be $8.50, and shipping costs for multiple purchases are automatically discounted.

Vintage 1941 Framed Flag Print `SENTINEL OF FREEDOM` By Adrian Brewer - World War II WWII
Vintage 1941 Framed Flag Print `SENTINEL OF FREEDOM` By Adrian Brewer - World War II WWII

The frame has a worn finish but has been touched up and is very presentable. The paper that was on the back was replaced and the original label with information on the print and artist was saved.

Many reproductions of the painting `Sentinel of Freedom` were distributed to schools, churches, and individuals during World War II, and the painting has become a staple of modern culture. The painting was commissioned by Little Rock insurance executive Clyde E. Lowry. Lowry was acquainted with Brewer’s work as a combat artist who painted wartime posters and more during World War I. Lowry wanted a painting depicting “the beauty of the flag when the wind had died down and the gentle folds took their natural place.” The separate branches of the armed forces distributed the prints through their ranks. Ships that went to sea during World War II carried a print on board, and USOs had a print hung in their halls; it also hung in Congressman Brook Hays’s office in Washington DC. A print of the flag hung in many classrooms throughout Arkansas. Lowry received several thousand letters concerning the painting and thousands of requests for reproductions of it from such notables as automobile manufacturer Henry Ford, poet Edward A. Guest, former president Herbert Hoover, Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie, and General George W. Marshall. After the unveiling, it toured Washington DC in the 1940s, and Brewer autographed the prints being sold. The original finally ended up in the Little Rock Museum of Fine Arts, where it remained for several years. Lowry and Edwina Brewer, wife of Adrian Brewer, along with their families, presented the original to the U.S. Naval Academy, Assembly Hall Library, in Annapolis, Maryland, on March 1, 1964, where it is still displayed. The USMA class year book of 1924 has an entry for Donald Dean Rule. It reads as follows: "DONALD DEAN RULE " Dee Dee " — " D. D. " Senatorial SPOKANE Washington. To Rule we award the degree of I.E., meaning "Indifferent Engi-neer". By this, we mean he is an engineer by nature, but finds it too, much trouble to follow his natural bent. His favorite mode of procedure is to find out the assignment on the way to the writ-room and drift home half an hour early, with a cold 3.0 in his tenth box. To his tendency to solve problems that were never intended to be solved several of us owe quite a chunk of the gold bars that will adorn our shoulders in the near future. He was always ready to help the chap who needed the tenths. Rule hasn't decided what his future is going to be, but his plans always include acquiring a considerable fortune. Inasmuch as he has chosen the Air Service, we think he'll stand a good chance to get the coin all right — if he takes out enough insurance. T'lio hundred forly-lico."
