
 
Antique Page Turner or Paper Knife - Coin Silver Engraved Dec 25th 1868
Beautiful antique 7 1/8" page turner or paper knife made of coin silver with engraving. Impressive in its craftsmanship, the handle is engraved with decoration and the blade has the name of the original owner "Sophia Knight Seabury". It also has the date it was given, Dec 25th 1868. The other side of the turner or knife has beautiful engraving with foliate design and an empty cartouche for engraving initials. These were used to turn the pages of old texts and manuscripts, hence saving them from the damaging effects of the skin's oils, etc. This one in nearly pristine condition and a perfect tool (& accent) for the antique book collector! The 1896 "Social Register of New York" has a listing for a Miss Sophia Knight Seabury, Dr. and Mrs. Frederick Niles Seabury, and Dr. and Mrs. Wheaton Seabury. Their address is listed as "Finyal House, Providence RI." In addition, the 1919 "Harvard Alunni Directory" has a listing for Dr. Wheaton Seabury (dn 76-78) who lived at 135 Rochambeau Ave in Providence RI.
