Floyd Becenti Sr. passed on a marvelous legacy to his sons, Floyd, Jr., Lloyd, and Robert and daughter Eloise -- he taught them the distinctive overlay style he’d learned indirectly from Hopi artists who began using it in earnest after World War II. His sons have improved on this style over the years by adding a great deal more detail to each piece they make as well as refining both the story themes and the appearance of the story elements. Their work is on permanent display at the internationally famous Heard Museum in Phoenix, and you will find their work in prestigious southwestern galleries as well as all the current collectors' guides.

1920's Native American brooch in sterling silver with the whirling log or swastika symbol. This brooch was made for the tourist trade and looks like an Indian blanket. It measures 2 1/8" long by 3/4" wide and is in wonderful condition. The back is unmarked and the pin has an earlier C clasp. Native American jewelry of this era is getting hard to find and this is an exceptional example. In Navajo myth the swastika represents the legend of the whirling log. A tale of a man, cast out from his tribe, who rolls down river in a hollowed-out log. With the help of sacred deities he finds a place of friendship and abundance. In 1940, in response to Hitler's regime, the Navajo and other tribes signed a whirling log proclamation. It stated that "the emblem commonly known today as the swastika" would no longer appear on their crafts.

Pretty vintage Mexican sterling silver necklace and earring set. The necklace is 16" long and has 5 accent panels. The matching earring measure 1 3/4" long by 1" wide. The earring have a screwback finding but could easily be converted to pierced. Both pieces are marked "Hand Made Guaranteed Sterling 925 Guad Mex" and together they weigh 62.9 grams.
The construction is somewhat unusual in that the panels are made of two separate pieces of silver. The front piece has the cut out abstract design and the back is a solid panel. The two are joined together, but still spaced apart, by silver balls soldered in between the pieces. The back panel has been blackened to bring out the design on the front piece. A wonderful and unusual set!!
