Vintage English silver plated tastevin or wine tasting cup. The cup measures slightly over 3" across (not including the handle). Quality is very good, excellent design and weighty construction (3.43 ounces). The bottom of the tastevin is marked "Barker Ellis Made in England". Historical Background: Almost completely covered in dips‚ rises‚ and ridges‚ tastevins were designed to harness and magnify the dim candlelight of a winecellar‚ thus enabling the winemaker or cellarman to monitor the color and clarity of the wine during maturation. Though modern electric lighting has rendered tastevins obsolete‚ you can still see them displayed around the neck of a traditional sommelier as a mark of their craft.
